IN THE LAND OF MEDICINAL PLANTS…

150 years ago, in Chemillé Region, medicinal plant production appeared. Thanks to Aimé-Jean Godillon, native of Saint Lambert-du-Lattay, hardware dealer and herbalist specialised in the use of medicinal plants in the 1840’s in Paris, it has become a prosperous business.

Over the years, crops has become more important in the mild climate of Chemillé Region. During the 20th century, Chemillé became the capital of medicinal plants in Europe.

The Roman Camomille is the Region symbolic plant. By its sides grow other plants, more traditionnal, like Marigold (“souci”), Mint, Melissa, California Poppy, Valerian, Sweet Clover…

detail02In 2008, the medicinal and aromatic plant garden became “Camifolia”. The garden is an exhibition of 350 different variety of plants cultivated since 1888 in the Region.

The production is industrial, modern, oriented to international market and well developed in Chemillé Region.

Producers, Trades, Cooperatives, essantial oil extraction laboratories and ITEIPMAI (Technical Institute of Medicinal, Aromatic and Scented Plants Research) are important players in the sector.

Medicinal and Aromatic plant industry is a key element in the local economy and Chemillé Region’s showcase.
